Mount Whitney Hiking Guide: GPX files
Kraig Adams, kraigadams.com

These are my own GPS recordings of two days on Mount Whitney, California, on
April 22 and 23, 2021: from Whitney Portal up the Mount Whitney Trail to Trail
Camp; then, the next morning, up the 99 switchbacks to Trail Crest, along the
ridge to the summit, and all the way back down to Whitney Portal. They show the
way I actually walked. All timestamps have been removed.

mount-whitney-day-1.gpx Day 1: Whitney Portal, Lone Pine Lake, the
Whitney Zone sign, Outpost Camp, Mirror Lake
and Trail Camp (7.3 mi / 11.7 km)
mount-whitney-day-2.gpx Day 2: Trail Camp, Trail Crest, the John Muir
Trail junction, the summit and back down to
                              Whitney Portal (13.6 mi / 21.8 km)
mount-whitney-full-route.gpx Both days in one file, plus waypoints for the
                              places named in the guide.

stats.json The numbers for each day, and how they were
                              worked out.

My app paused twice, so each day has two track segments: on Day 1 for a
moment before the Whitney Zone sign, and on Day 2 from 1 p.m. to 2:31 p.m. on
the switchbacks on the way down. My GPS reads longer than the official trail
figures (10.7 miles from the Portal to the summit).

HOW TO LOAD THEM

AllTrails: on a computer, sign in at alltrails.com, create a new map and use
Import to upload the file. The map then shows up in the app on your phone.
Downloading it for offline use needs a paid AllTrails plan.

Gaia GPS: on your phone, open the file from Files, email or AirDrop and choose
Gaia GPS, or on gaiagps.com choose Import. Then download the map area for
offline use.

Garmin: in Garmin Connect (web), go to Training, Courses, Import, and pick the
file. Save it as a course and send it to your watch.

Organic Maps: first download the free offline map for California. Then open
the GPX file on your phone and choose Organic Maps. It shows up in your
bookmarks and tracks list and works fully offline.

Download offline maps in Lone Pine; there's little or no signal on the trail.
You need a permit for any visit, all year (recreation.gov, permit 445860), and
from May 1 to November 1 it goes by a lottery in February. Outside about late
June to mid-October expect snow and ice above Trail Camp, and in winter
Whitney Portal Road is gated below the trailhead. Use this as a guide, not a
guarantee.
