West Highland Way Hiking Guide: GPX files
Kraig Adams, kraigadams.com

These are my own GPS recordings of my four days on the West Highland Way in
Scotland, June 8 to 11, 2023, from Milngavie to Fort William, hiking alone,
and of Ben Nevis the day after. The files show the way I actually walked,
including a side trip down into Crianlarich and back on Day 2. All timestamps
and app data have been removed.

west-highland-way-full-route.gpx The four days of the Way in one file, with
waypoints for where I slept, the villages and
stops, the Devil's Staircase and Ben Nevis.
stats.json The distance, climbing and heights for each day.

The Way, Days 1 to 4: 105.3 mi (169.5 km), about 10,140 ft (3,090 m) of
climbing. The official length is 96 miles (154 km); my line is longer.
High point on the Way: the top of the Devil's Staircase, 1,821 ft (555 m).

IMPORTANT

The Way is waymarked the whole way; follow the marker posts where the files
and the path differ. My two tent spots (Loch Lomond and Bridge of Orchy) are
marked so you can see where I stopped, not as campsites to aim for: read the
camping rules in the guide first, above all for the east shore of Loch Lomond.
The Ben Nevis file includes the Carn Mor Dearg Arete, a narrow rocky ridge
with steep drops. It is not the ordinary path up the mountain.

HOW TO LOAD THEM

AllTrails: on a computer, sign in at alltrails.com, create a new map and use
Import to upload the file. The map then shows up in the app on your phone.
Downloading it for offline use needs a paid AllTrails plan.

Gaia GPS: on your phone, open the file from Files, email or AirDrop and choose
Gaia GPS, or on gaiagps.com choose Import. Then download the map area for
offline use.

Garmin: in Garmin Connect (web), go to Training, Courses, Import, and pick the
file. Save it as a course and send it to your watch.

Organic Maps: first download the free offline map for Scotland. Then open the
GPX file on your phone and choose Organic Maps. It shows up in your bookmarks
and tracks list and works fully offline.

Before you leave Glasgow, download offline maps and check that each day shows
up in your app. Paths, rules and conditions change. Use this as a guide, not a
guarantee.
