My hut-to-hut packing list
This is what I carry for routes with huts, rifugios and guesthouses, like Alta Via 1 and 2. I sleep in a liner, so there is no tent, stove or sleeping bag. Everything here is gear I use or used.

Carry
- Hyperlite Mountain Gear Waypoint 35. My pack for Alta Via 1 and the Skye Trail. 35 liters is enough for huts.
- Trekking poles. I used them on Alta Via 2.
Sleep (huts)
- Naturehike ZY20 Sleeping Bag Liner (Amazon). 4.5 ounces and washable. Most huts on Alta Via 1 and the Haute Route require one, and you don't need a sleeping bag.
- Crocs Classic Clog (Amazon). Hut and camp shoes. A must for hut to hut in the Alps.
- Earplugs for the dorm.
Clothes
- PATH Projects Pyrenees T19 Hoodie. My sun shirt. I wore it on the hottest days.
- Territory Run Co. Long Haul Short. My shorts. On Alta Via 1 I wore the same pair the whole hike.
- PATH Projects Joyner Crew Sock. My hiking socks. I bring a clean pair for towns and the airport.
- PATH Projects Lynx PD Base Liner. My underwear. Quick-dry, and I own six.
- Senchi Designs A90 Half Zip Hoodie. My fleece. Good on the trail and cozy at the hut.
- Arc’teryx Cerium Hoody. My puffy for cold mornings and sunsets at the hut.
- Arc’teryx Beta AR Jacket. My rain shell. Afternoon storms are normal in the mountains.
- Unigear Touchscreen Liner Gloves (Amazon). Thin liners that work with a touchscreen.
- Warm hat and a sun hat.
- Sunglasses.
- Rain pants, if the forecast is wet.
- Oboz Katabatic LT Low GTX. My shoes on Alta Via 1. Flawless, with zero blisters or grip issues over 75 miles.
Water and food
- Katadyn BeFree AC · 1L (Amazon). My filter bottle. One liter isn't enough, so carry a second bottle.
- A second bottle or bladder, so you have at least 1.5 to 2 liters of capacity.
- Snacks for the stretches between huts.
- Euros in cash for huts. Many don't take cards.
Navigation and safety
- Phone with offline maps and the GPX files from the guide.
- Nitecore NU20 Classic (Amazon). My headlamp, for early starts and the dorm at night.
- First aid kit with blister care and your medications.
- Sunscreen.
- Passport or ID and a card, for hut check-in.
- Travel insurance that covers mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation.
- Six Moon Designs Silver Shadow Carbon (Amazon). Shade on hot, open days. I called it the MVP of K2 Base Camp. I used an umbrella in a storm on Alta Via 2.
Camera
- Apple iPhone 16 Pro · 512 GB. What I film most of my trips on now. It is also my phone.
- DJI Osmo Pocket 4 (Amazon). A small gimbal camera I carry with the iPhone.
- SmallRig Carbon Fiber Tripod (Amazon). My carbon tripod. On Ak-Suu and in the Balkans it doubled as my trekking poles.
Small stuff
- Nitecore NB20000 (Amazon). My power bank. It also charges the camera.
- MINIX P1 66W GaN Travel Charger (Amazon). My travel charger, with a foldable plug and worldwide voltage.
- European plug adapter and charging cables.
- Sea to Summit Wilderness Wipes (Amazon). Trail wipes for the days without a shower.
The camping list is here. Every item, and the kit from each trip, is on my gear page.
